Using a limiter on individual tracks is always a bit tricky (see hint below), therefore, pure:limit is designed to process full mixes and will typically be used on the master track (stereo sum). This is also the reason why the profiles are representing genres rather than individual instruments.
That being said, pure:limit can also be used to level and limit individual tracks or buses. Simply choose the genre that best matches the style of your track and let pure:limit learn from your signal. Please keep in mind that you may have to tweak (typically turn down) the gain a bit after learning, since the plug-in will treat the individual track or bus similar to a full mix and may try to make it a bit too loud.
Hint: In case you want to reduce the dynamics of individual tracks or buses, we recommend to use a compressor and not a limiter to do the job. While limiters are great tools for giving a (full) mix the final polish, compressors allow for more subtle dynamic changes. For example, our tool pure:comp comes with profiles for instruments and buses and is a great tool for taming the dynamics of individual tracks.
